Not just cleaning up the crumbs after using a cutting board (keep a sanitized towel nearby to clean it quickly and it'll turn into something). Learning the basics of cooking is a prerequisite. If you're looking to improve, you should at least understand some terms used in recipes and cookbooks and be able to perform basic cooking techniques. If you want to learn how to bake a cake, you should have at least tried making simple pastries.

On many YouTube cooking channels, I've learned that many of the old school teachings about cooking and baking don't apply. But laughing at yourself and having fun as a cooking teacher means that students will also have fun with the cooking process.
